Unboxing – SoundPEATS Truengine 3 SE
The packaging of the SoundPEATS Truengine 3 SE has a lot of design, highlight, and style. The front side of the box displays the product in actual use scenario as well as the product model name with a VGP 2021 badge.
The other side of the box reveals a larger image of the product as well as its main features such as dual-driver, Qualcomm QCC3020, and support of AptX.
Looking at each side of the box, you will find a highlight of the Qualcomm chipset, country of origin as well as the profile of the brand, and a sticker indicating free premium ear tips from Comply.
Other than that, there’s nothing much else to mention.
Taking out the content of the box reveals the included accessories such as a Type-C USB cable for charging, manual, customer care card, and manual for the Comply ear tips. The package also comes with 4 pairs of ear tips in which one of those are made of memory foam.
The included pair foam ear tip is definitely a bonus and a welcome freebie to have. Hands off to SoundPEATS for including a foam ear tip for this earbud.
Closer-Look – SoundPEATS Truengine 3 SE
Removing the outer layer of the box reveals the content of the inner box. The inner box is covered with a thick black foam that protects the content of the box from moving out of its place and the cover can be seen on the image above at the upper left corner. Moving on to its inner content, the box reveals the earbuds. Both the earpiece and the charging case are held in place by this black hard plastic that prevents either of the devices from moving. Removing this hard plastic reveals the accessories that we have already shown above.
Looking closer at the charging case reveals an embedded battery design in the middle with 4 LEDs. The LEDs indicate the charge level of the earbuds. Furthermore, you will also find the exclusive slots of each earpiece with gold plated pin connectors for charging. The case is pretty nifty and sturdy and we like that the surface is black matte giving the overall product a premium feel.
Looking at the backside of the charging case reveals the port used to charge the case and the earbud pieces. It also has an LED indicator that changes color once the case and the earbuds are fully charged.
Performance – SoundPEATS Truengine 3 SE
Sound Quality and Performance
The sound quality of the SoundPEATS Truengine 3 SE out of the box is surprisingly great. The audio quality is crisp and solid with detailed highs to mids and by far decent lows. We’re surprised that despite the lack of equalization modes to configure the sound to your preference, the bass department still packs some punch, and it’s great. This earbud is definitely one of the best earbuds with excellent sound quality on the market and a great bargain considering its price. Sound quality is detailed, loud, clear, crisp, and solid overall and it does not lack any form of audio tones. Everything is there and is a well-round mix from all tones. SoundPEATS Truengine 3 SE is by far one of the best earbuds on the market that provides this level of sound quality for its price range. But then again, it’s far from perfect. It offers great sound quality for its price but don’t expect it to satisfy an audiophile. There are other better sounding earbuds on the market but, of course, it comes with a hefty price.
Microphone Quality and Performance
Testing the microphone performance and quality of the SoundPEATS Truengine 3 SE is quite simple. For our readers to understand and hear the actual microphone quality, we made a short recording of our voice as can be heard below.
The quality of the audio that you will hear from this recording is generally what you should expect from this earbud. Theoretically, if you’re on a phone call or a video chat, this will be the sound quality that the other person would hear from you as you converse. If you listen to it, you will notice that the microphone quality is surprisingly good. Our voice was crisp and clear as if we’re using a professional microphone for some reason. However, it’s far from perfect. If you listen closely, there’s some sort of static behind our voice. It’s minimal but noticeable and the noise sounds like the feedback of our voice coming out from a can. Nonetheless, the microphone quality exceeded our expectations dramatically. It’s really good and no words could sum it other than it being a great earbud for phone calls or online video chat.
Comfort & Fitting: Is it good for Sports?
The SoundPEATS Truengine 3 SE comes with a great fitting out of the box. It really fits well on our ear canal and holds itself well while we walk and listen to music. We like how it fits really well but the pressure that the ear tips exert somehow can easily induce ear fatigue in just a matter of hours. Fortunately, the SoundPEATS Truengine 3 SE comes with a foam ear tip pair for free other than the 3 silicon pair that it already comes with. Pretty nice bonus if we say so ourselves. Now you don’t have to purchase foam ear tips separately unless if you need a larger size.
For sports and outdoor activity, the SoundPEATS Truengine 3 SE can hold itself for minor fast phase movements such as fast walking, minor exercises, or biking. However, extreme sports or activity such as running, jogging, wall climbing, swimming, extreme workouts in the gym can be a problem. The earbud holds itself on your ear through the pressure it exerts in your ear canal. Other than that, there’s nothing else that will support the earbud to stay in its place that’s why it’s not ideal for heavy sports or workout.
Ear of Use: Functions of the Earbuds
One functionality that most consumers would prefer to have on the earbuds out of the box is the ability to adjust the volume. Most earbuds on the market have neglected such functionality and opted for something else. Fortunately, the SoundPEATS Truengine 3 SE comes with volume control.
For more functionality control, refer to the table below.
Action | Function |
---|---|
Tap 1x | Increase/Decrease Volume |
Tap 2x | Answer/Hang Up Phone Call |
Tap 3x | Activate Voice Assistant |
Tap & Hole (1.5s) | Previous/Next/Reject Call/Power On |
Tap & Hold (2s) | Switch Calls |
Tap & Hold (6s) | Pairing Mode |
Tap & Hold (10s) | Power Off |
If there’s one function that this earbud is missing, it would be the equalizer. We’ve tested a number of earbuds in the past couple of months and some of those have a functionality set for tapping the control 4 times.
Battery: Playtime & Charging
Both earpieces of this earbud come with a 55mAh battery which is a typical capacity for earbuds. It has a rated playtime of up to 6.5 hours in one single full charge. When it comes to its charging case, the case comes with a 500mAh capacity which should give the earbud an extended playtime of up to 29.5 hours. So it’s going to take a while before you actually need to charge the earbuds with its case.
During our test, the earbuds lasted about 6.84 hours from listening to music, watching movies, and some YouTube videos in one single full charge. Furthermore, we were able to fully charge the earbuds using the charging case by 4 more times.
At 0% capacity for both the earbud and the charging case, it took us about 1.75 hours to achieve 100% full charge for both devices. For our charging test, we used a charging power brick that’s capable of fast charging and supports quick charge technology as well as Power Delivery technology.
Using SoundPEATS Truengine 3 SE for Gaming
Is the SoundPEATS Truenginge 3 SE good for gaming? We tested the earbud on how it would perform when used for video gaming such as on a PC, laptop, or smartphone. Unfortunately, it’s not ideal for gaming. There’s a noticeable delay in audio when playing video games.
During our test, there’s a significant delay in audio after performing an action in-game. Firing a gun, for example, has about more or less than a second delay from visual action to hearing the audio effect. Due to this latency, this earbud is not recommended for gaming especially for competitive gaming.
Final Thoughts
It is not easy to find an earbud that’s truly worth its price value. In most cases, earbuds under US$50 tend to compromise certain aspects of their features or performance to achieve such a competitive price. The same thing can be said with the SoundPEATS Truengine 3 SE. It’s not a perfect earbud and it’s far from being one but its flaws become trivial once you experience this earbud. For a selling price of US$ 49.99, you’ll be surprised by what this earbud is capable of.
We like how it really performs well with its sound quality as well as with its microphone quality and comfortable fit. All notes are there and the well-blended mix of tones enables it to produce crisp and clear audio that’s a hard comparison against other earbuds in the same price range. This earbud is truly a league of its own. The microphone quality is also superb. We haven’t tested or have seen one yet that’s capable of producing a clear voice during cellular phone calls. The SoundPEATS Truengine 3 SE is a remarkable earbud considering its price. It’s a manifestation of the phrase “You get more than what you paid for.”
For audiophiles and for those nitty picky ones, the low tone department is not as punchy as one would expect. The bass is there and it’s noticeable but it lacks punch. Furthermore, as you use the earbuds for longer hours, you’re bound to have that itch of wanting to increase the bass for some reason. Another worth noting is its fitting. This earbud highly depends on your ear canal to stay on your ear so ear fatigue is faster to build up the longer you use the earbuds. Additionally, the more you move such as walking or cooking, the looser the earbuds become. So it’s not ideal for sports or heavy workouts in the gym. Simple jogging is enough to loosen the grips of the earbuds on your ear canal. Fortunately, SoundPEATS included a foam ear tip to address the fatigue build-up when using silicone ear tips. This is definitely an added plus as you get a premium ear tip from Comply for free.
All in all, the SoundPEATS Truengine 3 SE is a highly recommended wireless earbuds if you’re on the market looking to purchase a brand new one. The only thing that we would consider a deal-breaker for this earbud is if you need one for gaming or sports activity.
