Sharkoon’s been on a roll expanding their peripheral line in recent years and their rapidly improving on what they offer in both feature and performance. Their recent outing with their Skiller line of products have managed to elevate the brand’s game on a whole new level and their push into gaming is becoming more and more aggressive with their line of gaming chairs, etc. Today we’ll take a look at the Sharkoon 1337 RGB gaming mouse mat. This 13×10 soft mat has a nifty little trick: it’s an RGB soft mat meaning it’s flexible and pliable so it rolls up nicely for travel.
Unlike most soft mat, the Sharkoon 1337 RGB mat is packaged in a flat box. This is a great touch as it removes the possibility of the mat curving and losing its flatness in the packaging. The front of the package features a shot of the product with green lighting on as well as the model designation. At the back there’s multilingual feature bullets of the mat.
The mat is well packaged inside the box and is wrapped in plastic for protection. A manual is included as well.
The Sharkoon 1337 RGB gaming mat is a soft, textile surface and has an exact dimension of 359 x 279 x 3mm. That’s 14.13″ x 10.98″ x .11″ should you need it in English system. The Sharkoon 1337 RGB also features a braided USB cable to power the mat’s lighting system.
At 3mm thin, this mat is quite thin and has a very low profile. Provided its size, the Sharkoon 1337 RGB is quite small for a premium gaming mat. The edges are stitched closed with the lighting medium embedded on the edges.
The small plastic module on the upper left of the Sharkoon 1337 RGB powers the lighting of the mat. The control button is also in this module which lets you control the lighting effect.
The light isn’t that bright and wouldn’t really standout in a lit room but once the lights go dim or totally out, the mat perfectly highlights the sillhouette of the mat giving it some sort of aura effect. The 1337 RGB features a couple of lighting effects including breathing and straight cycling of the colors.
Given the soft nature of the material, you can actually flex and fold the mat even with the lights are on and this is a great touch. Quite frankly the only one of its kind that I have ever had the pleasure of using.
User Experience & Conclusion
While I’m a bit more reserved on RGB on my mouse, for the mouse mat, I’m totally for it. It’s a trend that certainly has polarizing opinion but in the case of the Sharkoon 1337 RGB, I think it’s a well-executed idea and it certainly isn’t over the top. The light halo lighting provides a great way to accentuate your desk in the dark while still maintaining where your mouse mat is.
Talking about performance, the surface of the 1337 RGB is a nice balance of speed and control. It’s got a decent amount of slick to it but it also has enough grit for precision control. While we do wish it was larger, finger-, claw-grip or twitch gamers will probably appreciate the surface real estate.
The surface material used is great and feels really durable but it does need improving. The product’s relatively light weight make it quite easy to swipe up when doing heavy strokes with your mat and it does flop around when wind blows on it e.g. you have a fan pointed towards you. While you can weigh the mat down, we really feel that a better bottom surface would have improved the situation.
Other than that last bit, the Sharkoon 1337 RGB mouse mat is a great surface to play on. With a price tag of only EUR20/USD24/Php1250, its certainly a tad bit pricier than most mats its size but given the RGB feature, one that is well implemented, it’s actually a handsome offer. You can get cheaper RGB mats but those are of the hard variety and offer smaller mousing surface.
The Sharkoon 1337 RGB gaming mouse mat offers an excellent balance of surface area, precision control and RGB lighting for a great price. If you’re looking to spruce up your desk but want a specifically soft mat gaming surface, this is your top choice.
We give the Sharkoon 1337 RGB gaming mouse mat our B2G Recommended Seal!
