The front of the packaging gives you a clear picture of the 2 gaming gear. Along with the 2 pictures are its highlights at the right namely RGB Lighting, On the Fly Macro, 3200DPI and a 2 year warranty.
Opening the packaging gives you the mouse and keyboard along with its manual. Nothing else is included in the bundle.
The keyboard is large with curved edges for the gamer-y design. What makes the keyboard large is the wrist wrest and the 12 macro and media keys located and a dj like knob for the lighting effects.
The included stand lifts the keyboard just
The left side covers 6 macro keys labeled T1-T6. Its quite weird to see macro keys starting with T as they are usually labeled starting with an M. Moving to the uper left you have your 3 macro profiles represented by M1, M2 and M3. Alongside the macro keys you have your 3 more buttons for My Computer, Mail Client and a home button. While the 3 keys are not that impressive, its still a nice feature to have.
The top center of the keyboard you can find an LED control wheel to control the brightness of the keyboard. The buttons on right hand side of the volume wheel are your media control keys. Personally, It would’ve been much better if the wheel was for volume control rather than an LED control. It gives gamers the ease in tuning the volume up or down without having to spam a volume key with -2/+2 increments.
The wrist rest of the keyboard is what makes it large. Unfortunately the wrist rest is nondetachable but it provides a decent amount of comfort when using specially for prolonged gaming sessions.
The mouse sports an ambidextrous design instead of the usual right hand ergonomic design found on most mice. Upon initial checking, the scroll wheel of the mice is a bit more inclined near the left mouse button as opposed to it being in the center. The mouse has an exposed transparent plate that covers the sides of the body which is used for LED illumination.
The sides of the mouse contains side grips. Gamers who are “pasmado” might have some issue because the side grips tend to be slimey and moist when wet. The side buttons are nothing special, the tactile feedback from pressing is what would you expect from a budget gaming gear.
The tactile feedback on the left and right mouse buttons are crisp and present a decent actuation force. The DPI level switch is hard to use thanks to it being a bit more slightly at the back of the scroll wheel. The LED lighting on the mouse changes when using the DPI level switch to denote the current DPI level.
Lighting and Software
The LED lighting is illuminated evenly across the mouse except in between the scroll wheel and the DPI switch where its just too vibrant. The sensor’s lighting on the other hand interfere’s with the RGB aesthetic of the mouse with it outshining the back part of the mouse.
The main page of the software gives you an overview of the keyboard as well as a having the option to create, save and load profiles. The software limits you to have only 3 active profiles. The next tab gives you control for macros. These macros are binded to your current active profile. The advanced settings tab gives control over the keyboard’s response time and polling rate. The last tab gives you full access in customizing the keyboard’s lighting.
CONCLUSION
Performance. The keyboard is very comfortable to game on. The software works with ease and is responsive unlike its big brother’s Poseidon RGB app. Moreover, the dedicated top row buttons have a odd tactile feel and is quite a bit “bumpy” as compared to the keyboard keys itself. The mouse on the other hand, works fine and its just about what you would expect on a gaming mouse, with RGB lighting of course.
Build Quality. Both the keyboard and mouse are light but doesn’t show any compromise in build quality. The keyboard shows resistance to flex when force is applied.
Functionality. The TTesSports Challenger Prime RGB keyboard gives features necessary for gamers to have an advantage, specially in macros as this keyboard is very much capable in doing so. The on the fly macro is very handy if you use the
Bundle. Aside from the rudimentary features, you have your RGB lighting option for that additional bling and bragging rights.
Value. Priced at $60, this gaming gear combo is leaning more towards the premium side with other cheaper combos priced $10-15 cheaper.
All in all the combo packs a great punch despite its $10-ish dollar premium compared with other gaming gear combos for just the RGB lighting. The keyboard’s On-The-Fly macro recording proves to be very hand specially when you use the gaming gear as your go-to peripherals as you wont need to download its software to enjoy the selling point feature of the keyboard. The mouse also has an on-the-fly DPI level switcher thanks to its dedicated DPI switch and as a bonus, Thermaltake lets you control the lighting of the mouse if you use the DPI button and a one of the mouse buttons accordingly. While it looks like both the keyboard and mouse needs the software to unleash its full potential, Thermaltake’s implementation of an on-the-fly settings makes it stand and gives some gamers a hassle free experience.
Thermaltake gives the Challenger Prime RGB Gaming Gear Combo a 1-Year warranty. We give it our Performance Award!
