Conclusion
We’ll just address straight-on and say that given that AMD has co-developed this product, its without saying that the RX 580 is a given. Many of you would be imagining the advantages of having a GTX 1080 mobile for this variant but that’s something up to ASUS in the coming months. That said, the Ryzen 7 + RX 580 configuration is something we can say would be common in most mainstream setups that want the balance of core count performance and mainstream GPU power. This is actually the most recommended setup we have for people who want to stick to an all-AMD platform.
Going back to the ASUS ROG Strix GL702ZC, its certainly a impressive piece of work. In terms of physical appearance, it doesn’t really break any records but again looking at what’s inside the chassis, you’d realize that at 3.5mm and only 3.2kgs you’re getting the performance of a desktop that at most would be 10x the footprint. But who needs such power?
Well there’s two kinds of people in particular that would benefit from the ROG Strix GL702ZC’s offerings. First off would be multimedia professionals particularly video professionals and content creators who need to roll-out projects on a same-day basis e.g. wedding and event coverages etc.
Above is our CineScore benchmark results for 4K UltraHD rendering using different codecs for the GL702ZC. To put that into perspective, here are benchmarks of desktop variants.
The benchmark gives a good picture of what kind of performance the system provides on various codecs on certain resolutions as we can see from the benchmarks (barring the CUDA-accelerated profiles), there’s a close gap between the performance both systems. This translates to mere seconds in regards to encoding which in real world would mean having the ability to work with 4K footage for same-day edit projects.
On the other side of the spectrum, something closer to gamers, would be streamers. AMD has touted their Ryzen 7 as the perfect streaming platform allowing gaming systems to stream without taking an FPS hit due to CPU load from stream encoding. Many streamers have varying configurations but some do prefer working with their portable laptops for their all-in-one solutions. With the ROG STRIX GL702ZC, that capability is now present in mobile form factor in a 17.3″ notebook with the capability of a desktop that can allow both mainstream AAA gaming and streaming at the same time.
Again, ASUS has deveoped a purpose-built notebook that completely closes the gap between desktop and laptop. Normally when we say desktop replacement, we normally refer to the gaming performance of a system but in this case its a complete top-down solution bringing true desktop class performance on the go thanks to its 8-core Ryzen CPU. While it may identify as a gaming product, the ASUS ROG Strix GL702ZC 8-core gaming laptop is a professional workstation thoroughbred capable of delivering so much more.
