Final thoughts on the GeForce RTX 4070
With the RTX 3060 making its way as the most popular graphics card amongst Steam users recently, NVIDIA is looking to convince those who are 2 or 3 generations behind to consider upgrading their system. The entire RTX 40-series hinges on a lot of tech with 3rd-gen RT cores, 4th-gen Tensor cores on the Ada Lovelace cards allowing a new stack of applications way beyond just pure raster performance.
NVIDIA doubles down on this with a lengthy reviewers’ guide allowing the media to cover the extensive use-cases of the RTX 40-series. In the case of the RTX 4070, this makes some of these technologies much more accessible for those that need it with its more attractive price point.
Pure performance alone, at 1440p the card averages ~235FPS on a combination of competitive esports title and AAA games. Esports alone sees near-400FPS at 1440p, an effective doubling from the RTX 2070.
DLSS3 is a force multiplier here and we did observe weird results in Spiderman and F1 2022 in 4K but in Cyberpunk 2077, the results is as impressive like it was on the higher-tier 40-series cards. But chief amongst all its traits is its high efficiency with most games only sipping 160W-180W from the rated 200W max draw of the RTX 4070.
But at $599, the NVIDIA RTX 4070’s launch price is much higher than the RTX 3080 and a big jump from the RTX 2080, people who may be expecting the xx70 class RTX 40-card to cheaper. And I agree, while it does dump all this tech for its asking price, a $550 or even a $500 card could’ve been the market disruptor we needed to revitalize the market especially with more games pushing Frame Generation. This leaves those folks looking to save a buck to still look at used RTX 30-series cards and squeeze some more life out of them.
And yes, the only competition right now for the RTX 4070 is a sub-$300 RTX 3080 and RTX 3080 Ti if you can find one but provided you don’t care about DLSS3 Frame Generation or faster AV1 encoding. A tertiary option is a Radeon RX 6900XT or RX 6800XT who may not match the RTX 4070 in all-out 1440p performance, but again, if you can get it for $300 or less, it is an option. At $500 or so, any of those older cards save the 3080 Ti sits behind the efficiency curve that the RTX 4070 offers just better value in terms of efficiency.
Final thoughts on the ASUS RTX 4070 DUAL
Unlike the NVIDIA RTX 4070 Founders Edition we also reviewed, the ASUS RTX 4070 DUAL is available in the Philippines and as a reference card, will be available with an MSRP of PHP40,590 although street prices may be lower from some dealers.
As mentioned, the RTX 4070 DUAL shares a lot with the PRIME series of motherboards from ASUS. Majority of them cosmetic, but at this point in time, its also ASUS’ entry series graphics card for the RTX 4070. Featuring triple slot cooler though, it is thicker than the relatively more compact RTX 4070 FE but with the option of allowing Performance and Quiet dual-BIOS options via an onboard switch. The card is cool enough that the Quiet option would be the preferred option but the choice is yours.
With a single PCIe 8-pin connector, the ASUS RTX 4070 DUAL is highly compatible even on pre-builts with only a spare 8-pin power, provided it can house the card. Still, we’ve observed a little bit higher draw on the RTX 4070 DUAL vs. FE despite the lack of onboard lights. While neglible, this is peculiar for a reference card.
Its going to be hard to nitpick against ASUS for this card, and while I stated my disagreement with the choice to match the cooler style with the PRIME boards despite the color mismatch, that may be the only thing I have against this card. In general, I do wish the MSRP for the RTX 4070 could be lower, but given its performance even in reference cards, it makes SKUs like the ASUS RTX 4070 DUAL ideal for those who aren’t picky at what they go with.
This works well for those that are looking to get their work/play system who just want a drop-in upgrade that will improve their system performance without worrying about “gaming” features and other buzzwords.
This wraps us around the value of the RTX 4070 and its efficiency mixed with its feature set, which makes it uncontested in terms of overall value for all its offering. In pure gaming, 2nd-hand options may be up for consideration but with year-one bought RTX 30-series cards already nearing their end of warranty, an RTX 4070 like the ASUS RTX 4070 DUAL is currrently your most affordable option to jump into the RTX 40-series as 1440p becomes the best of both worlds in gaming displays.
What was going on with that huge discrepancy between the 4070 FE and this card in the Cyberpunk benchmarks?
I am actually reconfirming. I assumed it was because it was an OC card on launch but now that’s I’ve tested other OC’d cards, the diffeence should only be around 5FPS in 1080p. For reference the ASUS TUF 4070 OC and GB Aero 4070 OC both hit around 129FPS @1080p. I only got these cards recently so I’ll be update these once the data is final.
