Closer Look

PNY packages the DUO-Link 3.0 in a simple packaging with the capacity highlighted in bold print at the top corner. We have the 32GB model in Gold. The back of the package highlights details about the product.

The main body of the PNY DUO-Link 3.0 is clad in metal and comes in either Gold or Grey. The capacity is highlighted in one side where the slide is located. This slide is used to toggle which end of the DUO-Link 3.0 you want to use. Just slide out one end and you’re ready.

The main body of the DUO-Link follows the same build as the Apple ones. A subtle rounded edge on both sides with a flat end on each connector end. The back of the part of the slider is all metal.

As you can see there is some space for the Lightning end so even if you have a really thick bumper or case, there is enough space to insert the PNY DUO-Link 3.0.

Software

One connected, a prompt will appear to download the app. This app allows the user to manage the PNY DUO-Link 3.0 on their device and manage backups and storage. The interface is pretty intuitive and easy to navigate.

Conclusion

The PNY DUO-Link 3.0 has an average USB3.0 performance of around 90MB/s read and 18MB/s write. Lightning should offer the same level of performance but its hard to gauge maximum throughput in mobile but on a more general sense, there shouldn’t be any performance issue with this one if your mostly using it save your photos, music and videos. Transferring it to your PC though is the one more reflective here.

Overall the PNY DUO-Link 3.0 offers a good option to easily expand your 16GB iPhone or iPad with larger storage. Its compact size and good build quality lets you bring it along with you in a small bag or in your pocket to instantly backup and store your device’s files making an easy-to-use solution. The ability to switch between interface makes it easier to also transfer files to and from your Apple device without using a cable.
