NVM Express Inc., the industry association in charge of the open NVM Express standard, has just showed off a demonstration of NVMe on HDDs. For those unfamiliar, NVMe is the current interface protocol used by most M.2 SSDs while hard drives are using the older SATA interface, particularly SATAIII 6Gbps.
While current HDD technology for consumers don’t have any particular advantage for NVMe on HDDs, enterprise applications may see multi-actuator products in the future and NVMe is a viable choice for utilizing this speeds without having SATA develop a new interface as well as SAS. Seagate is demoing this drives as they potential use in future markets and the drives will still be compatible with both SAS and SATA interfaces.
Seagate will be sampling this technology to select customers in 2022.
