2020 has been a difficult year for everyone, what with the pandemic currently affecting our lives. Movies, businesses, and even people’s lives ground to a halt. The video game industry is not spared, with releases being pushed back a few months – maybe even a year – because of these delays.
Even then, there are a lot of new games coming out. There are even a few sequels that are set to arrive. Some of them, to name a few, are The Last of Us: Part II, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and an alleged sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
The sequels coming out in 2020 appears to be a who’s who of the video game industry. Some franchises, thought to be asleep for a long time, are set to undergo a revival. There is also a rumour that a long-awaited release is set to come out this year, which is one of the most anticipated RPGs to come out in the last five years.
Here now are some of 2020’s best new games and upcoming sequels:
1. Cyberpunk 2077
The CD Projekt Red game has been hailed as a fitting follow-up to the highly-successful The Witcher: Wild Hunt. The latest creation takes a big departure from the medieval theme of the Witcher series as it is set in a futuristic city, with a protagonist that looks and feels like a cyborg. The main protagonist is V, who is a cybernetically enhanced mercenary. He is guided by no less than a hologram, played by actor Keanu Reeves, through the sprawling megalopolis of Night City.
Through his travels, he will deal with deviants and criminals, seizing opportunity as he comes across it. Its appeal is because of its open-world gameplay as well as being one of the most ‘busiest’ cities in gaming.
2. Half-life: Alyx
The sequel to the game that created Counter Strike has finally gotten a follow-up in the form of Alyx. It is actually a Prequel, happening before the events of the actual game. It is also a huge upgrade for the series as it features the option to be played in VR.
Alyx will feature 15 hours of story as players make their way through a map that features the streets and surroundings of City 17. It is run by the intergalactic Combine. The city also features a neighborhood that looks like a Communist suburb. The game will also feature gravity gloves, which appears to be an upgraded form of the gravity gun.
3. Minecraft Dungeons
Minecraft Dungeons is a fitting new development from Mojang which was launched April of this year. It arrived on the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and Windows 10. If Minecraft was a sandbox-style, open-world game, Dungeons will not follow in that fashion.
The game, like its second name suggested, is a crawler-style game which has the player explores dungeons that are procedurally generated. They will fight familiar enemies from the series and will also find treasures deep within these dungeons.
4. Resident Evil 3 Remake
It’s technically not a sequel but a remake of Resident Evil 3. It is actually a sequel of Resident Evil 2, a game that came out the same time as it did. Gamers were excited, particularly because in the original series, RE3 decidedly packed more action than the game before it.
The RE3 remake featured new game modes aside from the original story gameplay. It had a new multiplayer mode for players to try out as well as a Nemesis who could barge in absolutely anywhere. It doesn’t pack the same amount of excitement as its predecessor did, but it is a continuation down the path which the series had been on for years.
5. Death Stranding
The arrival of this game from Hideo Kojima was controversial. For one, Kojima had just severed ties with Konami and went on his own. It also features a cast of impressive characters led by Norman Reedus of Walking Dead fame. The arrival of the PC version comes impressively only some months after its debut for the PS4.
The game features Reedus character delivering time-sensitive packages in a post-apocalyptic America. That’s as simple as it gets, though, because a Kojima game is anything but simple.
6. A Total War Saga: Troy
The Total War series has produced many games rooted in history, some of which had been used to portray famous battles in history. Troy is no different. It is under the banner of the Total War saga and it focuses on a very specific period of time, the war of Troy in history.
It focuses on the classic war between the Greeks and the Trojans, where the former crossed the Aegean to rain terror upon the latter, with their famous impenetrable walls. Secret agents, special troops, and cavalry are included in this game as well.
7. DOOM Eternal
The 2016 version of Doom was a god-send for most players. It featured next-gen graphics as well as a revitalization of the classic hell-slaying shooter. It also featured something new thanks to the upgrades; glory kills that gave the character health and jump pads that featured new, exciting ways to kills cacodemons were only a few of this.
Doom Eternal, which launched into new platforms, followed up on the path blazed by this game. It featured things like grappling hooks, the return of the Super Shotgun, and an improved multiplayer capability – more exciting ways to kill demons.
8. The Elder Scrolls VI
The sequel to another successful open-world game in Skyrim that’s been much discussed as well. Bethesda head Todd Howard has been talking about the future of the Elder Scrolls franchise for a long time, but it was only during E3 2018 when it was discussed. Discussions had the game releasing this year, but that remains to be seen.
The team wants to release a new game because The Elder Scrolls V remains a hugely successful game. That being said, it would be better to wait and see what they come up with, as a rushed game could instead backfire on them.
