With the Playstation 4 system update 4.5 allowing usage of external hard drives, I was eager to quickly upgrade my PS4 Pro with a new storage and having read on what to expect from an SSD upgrade on the PS4, I decided on settling for a mainstream capacity of 240-256GB for an SSD and use a portable HDD as extended storage for my data.
With a ton of new games coming out on the PS4 every month, its hard to decide which to keep and if you’re like me that prefer digital copies, it becomes a problem when you want to store all that data inside your PS4 but still want the benefit of a high-performance storage update.
Still, I was decided on just sticking with my upgrade setup and hopefully when the time comes just upgrade onwards. For now I’m sharing my experience on using the setup of a Transcend SSD220S 240GB SSD as my main drive and a Transcend StoreJet 25C3N as my extended app storage.
Installing the SSD varies on PS4 systems so do check out guides before proceeding. I’m using a PS4 Pro which like the new slim PS4, has an access slot at the back where the drive tray is placed. You will need to remove this drive tray and replace the stock PS4 HDD with your shiny new Transcend SSD220S. For the original PS4, the tray is just below removable top plate.
You will need to reinitialize your PS4 system installation with a USB flash drive and you can find the installation file here: https://www.playstation.com/en-us/support/system-updates/ps4/
After installation, you can now get started on your new system with a fresh new SSD. If you want to keep your older system though, you can back-up your files first using the built-in backup tool.
As mentioned, you can now use external hard drives as extended storage for your PS4. In this setup, I’m using a 1TB StoreJet 25C3N to serve as my extended drive. So far I’ve only installed Nier Automata and Final Fantasy XV and I’m happy with the increased loading times thanks to the Transcend SS220S SSD upgrade. The slim profile of the Transcend StoreJet 25C3N makes it blend in nicely with the PS4 Pro thanks to its slim profile.
Overall, I’m satisfied with this configuration and hopefully you guys find my experience helpful if you’re thinking of going down the upgrade route.
