Innosilicon is a Chinese Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) company that’s leaving tongues wagging owing to the impressive tech it has been producing. However, as the GPU company’s popularity continues to grow, the question that has been popping up in people’s minds of late is, ‘is it capable of competing with industry giants like NVIDIA and AMD?’ Well, that remains to be seen.
To date, the clearest indication yet that Innosilicon will be a strong player in the market was its November 2020 announcement of its new GPU named Fantasy One. Read on to discover why the industry players consider the release of Fantasy One GPU a big boy move.
Main Characteristics of the Fantasy One GPU
All indications are that Fantasy One is set to place Innosilicon in the big leagues of the graphics business. Fantasy One GPU is based on Imagination Graphics, specifically the IMG B-Series BXT. This stems from the collaboration between Innosilicon and Imagination that dates back to October 2020.
The IMG B-Series BXT itself received critical acclaim from tons of users as an incredibly high-performance and efficient GPU. So, based on the stellar reputation of the IMG B-Series BXT, there’s no doubt that Fantasy One will not disappoint performance-wise.
As of now, Innosilicon is yet to officially announce the figures of the core and VRAM clocks of Fantasy One. However, what we know so far is that it uses 7nm technology, and it will come in 4 versions that will consist of single and dual designs, i.e., Type A and Type B designs. Here’s a closer look at the two design architectures:
Type A Version
Innosilicon will release the Type A version as the consumer or workstation version, and it will offer 5 TFLOPS. These TFLOPS will be of single-precision computing power, and they’ll also have a fill rate of 160GPixel per second. For those conversant with GPU technology, you may already know that this same feature exists in the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 or the “BFGPU” as Jensen Huang, NVIDIA’s CEO likes to call it. The Type A version is said to consume 50W of power, considerably lower than the similar-classed NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090.
Type A will also have a 16GB GDDR6X memory running at a speed of 19GBps. It also allows for a respectable bandwidth of 304GB per second, just like the AMD RX6700XT GPU. As for port support, it will come with the HDMI2.1 and VGA display port 4.
Type B Version
The Type B version is designed as a dual GPU with a fan that acts as its cooling system. The dual GPUs are linked by an interface or rather a chipset known as Innolink, which provides a medium for large amounts of low latency data to pass from one tiny chip to another, hence its name. In addition, Type B is designed to maximize the bandwidth between the chips, a vital feature that ensures that GPU maintains a high level of performance.
Given that the Type B is a dual GPU, it, therefore, means that it is twice as powerful as type A. It has 10 TFLOPS, a fill rate of 320GPixel per second and runs on 32 GB GDDR6X memory. Mind you, the GDDR6X memory has until now been a preserve of the two GPU giants, NVIDIA and AMD. However, with Innosilicon now in the mix, it could be a sign that their time at the helm for the two GPU juggernauts is definitely going to be challenged by the newest kid on the block.
What Does the Future Hold for Innosilicon GPUs?
While still very young in the GPU market, Chinese company Innosilicon is already proving that it can give the industry’s top dogs a run for their money. The leading-edge features that the Fantasy One GPU comes with mean that we can expect even better things from Innosilicon in the coming years. The outstanding features aside, other vital aspects that remain to be seen is how Innosilicon will price the Fantasy One GPU and its commercial availability upon release. Moreover, until consumers can get their hands on the tech and give it a real-world usage test, it’s hard to tell whether it will actually match what the competition already offers.
